Does this version check for updates or does it have 1.0.2 hard coded as the version to install?

Neonkoala is still working on the updater, he found a bug yesterday that he needs to fix, once its sorted you'll be able to update :)

So I prison break my phone and use Chlamydia to install un-John Hancock\'d applications, then I somehow use a Surfboard to change the way my African Safari looks.

Userland flash isnt finished yet, they still have some iOS patches to do and need to complete the implementation in bootlace - that might take a bit of time, all I can say is 'soon' because I dont have a definitive timescale

Flashing OpeniBoot from userland you mean, unfortunately no (unless things have changed since yesterday), 2.0.4 will be focused on compatibility with future versions of iDroid (including 1.0.3) without needing to upgrade Bootlace every time.
