iX - Ubuntu for the iPhone 2nd Dev release.
« on: August 08, 2010, 10:17:20 AM »
Hello again.

Just like to announce to the forum that the second developer image is now up and running, the only really new thing is landscape orientation, but I have fixed many of the bugs that were caused by my human error in the last release. In short, this is a much cleaner image. If you are going to download and give Ubuntu a try please read the READMEFIRST, it includes a short tutorial. The first time you run the image will take than you should expect with this being a cleaner install xfce4 has not set up directory structure ect. the second time you boot it'll be much faster. A Fedora port to the iPhone is under way thanks to Affix and Lopi in #ix.

Please check on ixproject.org for download, a picture and a video.

the fedora port is hitting a few issues on boot with the Red Hat Graphical Boot Client. Lopi and myself are working to resolve this issue. might need to rec-configure the whole boot process to remove RHGB.

yes the kernels are interchangable. However I recommend using the iX kernel with iX and iDroid with iDroid just to save compatibility issues.

iX's kernel is just alex's repacked, so it is directly interchangeable

To avoid any confusion:

(1) Currently, there is no iX kernel. Although, we may need to make some modifications when there is enough progress. We simply use the iDroid kernel packaged by Alex.
(2) There is limited to no documentation at this point on the project. I have made an "unofficial"  developer's guide if anyone is interested. Contact me on irc for more information.

General information:

(1) We're in the process of making documentation for the project. Jacquesdupontd and I are combining our personal documentation with modifications.
(2) Working on expanding the current website: http://www.ixproject.org
(3) We are always looking for more developers on the project. Currently, it's only James, Jacquesdupontd, and myself. I suspect Affix will be added soon.

Fedora:

(1) This port started on Thursday of last week. I was able to get Fedora 12 to boot into a console, but Affix was hanging on boot. A few days later, I ran into the same issue as Affix with RHGB hanging on boot.
(2) Yesterday, we tried using Fedora 10 instead of Fedora 12 and the boot problem went away. We have run into other complications, but are slowly working through them.
(3) We are currently working on getting ssh and wifi to work. This is the first step towards getting a working Xorg and touch screen.
(4) Why Fedora? Fedora allows us to port Meego and Maemo as well.

IRC:

(1) This is primary way of supporting users at this point. Please come on irc if you need help. I have no problem walking you through the process.
(2) Server: irc.osx86.hu
(3) Channel: #iX

Ideas:
(1) Fedora port
(2) Maemo
(3) Meego
(4) Have an idea to port something? Come talk to us on irc and we can help you get started.

Thanks so much, it worked like a charm!  I am so happy to have Ubuntu on my iPhone, I have been wanting to do this for three years.  :D

I have one suggestion for a slight change to contents of the READMEFIRST file included with the current release.
Step 4 includes these sample commands:
Quote
gunzip initrd.img.gz
mount -o loop initrd.img.gz /Path/to/mount
cp Firmwares /Path/to/mount/lib/firmware
umount /Path/to/mount
gzip initrd.img.gz

I needed to change it to this to make it work:
Quote
gunzip initrd.img.gz
mount -o loop initrd.img /Path/to/mount
cp Firmwares /Path/to/mount/lib/firmware
umount /Path/to/mount
gzip initrd.img
(the change is that in the 2nd and 5th lines I used "initrd.img" instead of "initrd.img.gz").

But, again, thanks!  Keep up the great work!

Does it run on the 1st Gen iPod Touch?  I am amazed that you could get X Windows up and running quickly.  I would love to try this out  :D

Thanks,

Yes, it works on iTouch 1G. Although, the ramdisk requires some minor modifications to make it work.

the same way you would run iDroid afaik. just rename the iDroid images and replace with the IX images.

It's possible, but I haven't implemented it yet.
